Leca is the gold standard of semi hydroponic plant growing. This substrate is made from balls of clay that are baked in such a way that they expand to create a light porous substrate. It is completely inert meaning it can be reused over and over. (And can be boiled or carefully baked to sterilize) It must be used in conjunction with hydroponic chemicals to ensure plants are getting nutrients.

Pros:

• Works great for many plants
• Reuse again and again
• Can be used to help drainage and moisture retention at the bottom of any other substrate including normal soil!

Cons:

• Not the best for plants with very fine roots, those require a finer substrate like pon
• Must use with hydroponic chemicals if used alone 
• You might become addicted and want to transfer all of your plants to leca!
